Khanh Brice Nguyen – The result of the scenario

It is a period of reflection and relates to aesthetics, taking place before considering the restraints of production. Intw Khanh Brice Nguyen

I wanted to become a fashion designer because I wanted to tell stories. As a kid, I always draw characters. I would especially draw female characters, and I would imagine they would become heroines. I would picture a world, an atmosphere around them, and very often, I named those heroines and give a title to my story. My only problem is that I never figure out how to start a plot. Actually my dream was to become a comic book artist or work for video games.  So after high school, I enrolled into an animation class. During that year, I reconnected again with drawing the characters but I was quite bad at animating them, and I got quickly bored of working on a screen. So the following year, I did a design foundation class and I had the options to try fashion and textiles. I finally had the chance to create my real life heroines from drawing, to sewing, and to photography. It is then that I realized the narrative potential of fashion, how creative and powerful it could be. As a teenager, one fashion show that really caught my attention was the Louis Vuitton spring summer 2008, by Marc Jacobs. The theme of the collection was around a collaboration with a graffiti artist called Richard Prince who did the artwork for the handbags. The opening of the show was supermodels like Naomi Campbell or Eva Herzigova dressed as nurses. I understood how fashion could bring so many elements of culture together, and create a momentum. I really thought « I want to create that one day ». It is quite personal but here I am joining one drawing I did at the time inspired by a look of the show.

KHANH BRICE NGUYEN – DESING AND INSPIRATIONS

Today, creating my own collections, I always start with a narrative. The first thing that comes to me is a word, a title. It can be an emotion, a person’s name or a place. From that, then I gather elements to create a story, keeping in mind the characters that would animate it. I never start with an idea of clothing, it is always the result of the scenario I am creating. I would like to compare my process similar to one of a movie director or a writer. One particular collection that illustrates this process is master’s degree collection. The title of this collection is « mindful noise ». Basically, I had the idea of creating a collection around a meditation sound experience. For this specific occasion, I created my own soundtrack with different noises. I did a video to capture this collection where a dancer is wearing the clothes of my collection, guiding the viewer through the meditative journey. It is mostly an experience I wanted to convey through visual, sound, and touch.
