Reflection and relates to aesthetics, taking place before considering restraints of production. Marta Sanchez Castañeda of KIDSOFBROKENFUTURE
How do you bring a vision into full-fruition? Forming ideas, images and concepts means to operate beyond the input of our physical senses.
It is a period of reflection and relates to aesthetics, taking place before considering the restraints of production. Design is the process that precedes the discipline of manufacturing. Our Fashion Editor Giorgia Fuzio in conversation with Marta Sanchez Castañeda.
Before studying fashion I’ve been working as a model around the world. This approach permit myself to better define my personal taste – the way established designers were reinterpretating cuts and shapes fascinated me. I decided to study fashion design, in a well known university in Barcelona. I ‘re-opened’ my ‘old’ archive of inspirations, of my first year at university. My references at that time were Cristobal Balenciaga – for his work on the sleeves –, the punk of Vivienne Westwood, the work on deconstructed garments and patterns by Maison Martin Margiela and Comme des Garcons of the 90s-2000. My favourite designers: Nicolas Ghesquière (especially when he was Balenciaga’s Creative Director) and Dapper Dan, cause he has been the pioneer of streetwear.
KIDSOFBROKENFUTURE has been launched at the beginning of 2019. Fabrics are 100% sustainable. Every season we plant as many trees as the consumption of C02 of our company and we collaborate with different charities. Every season we collaborate with an artist and we use his work as prints in a capsule inside the main collection. First collection feat. Nirvana @radioshead. Nirvana is now 19 years old. She comes from the kurdish iraq. Kurdish people has been repeatedly persecuted in the last decades because their territories are rich of petroleum and other precious resources. This is why we decided to give her the possibility of having an international exposition. In her artworks she mixes, with a collage technique, a classical image with a contemporary and irreverent one. After our collaboration Forbes dedicated an article to her work. Second collection feat. @thenewolder aka RED. Rediet was born in Ethiopia. At the age of 6 his parents died and he ended up with his little sister in an orphanage. They wanted to separate him from his sister but he opposed. Few months later an Italian family, from Milan, adopted him and his sister. He had the gift of a new life. Supported by his new mom, he studied art and attended the Accademia di Brera. He is now 23 yo and has collaborated with some established brand such as Moncler, Palm Angels and Neil Barrett. For the FW20 collection we had the privilege to collaborate with Robert Yager, one of the very few photographers that could get a close contact with the gangs of east LA back in the 90’s. He shot the last Balenciaga campaign.
