Neo-Nomadism chosen as theme for Lake Como Design Festival

The 4th annual Lake Como Design festival invites visitors to explore its definition of neo-nomadism. A special exhibition by Francesca Alfano Miglietti held from September 17-25 in Como.

Lorenzo Butti is the Lake Como Design Festival creator and artistic director. He believes that Lake Como is a territory that is not an annex of Milan. It constitutes a motherhouse because it is where the first group of abstract painters were born, architects, uncompromising artists, and rationalists. A design festival relates and connects the heritage in a way that is different to Milan.

Renewed Neo-Nomadism at Lake Como Design Festival

For this year’s fourth edition of the festival, the theme is Neo-nomadism. Lorenzo Butti hopes to express a nomadic nature through this fixed annual event. It accompanies visitors on a voyage of discovery through the artistic and architectural heritage of Lake Como. Neo-nomadism reflects the concept of moving between real and digital worlds through new moments of culture and labor. The festival explores how the movement of people is a defining element of our age, that is simultaneously influencing creativity.

Mr. Butti and FAM believes that nomadism has always been intertwined with forms of mobility, through information, money, or goods, but it’s the human mobility that characterizes the history of humans. In 2022, the forms of mobility have expanded. Whether it be for work, study, or global events like the Olympics or exhibitions, along with urban commuting, summer holidays, weekends outside the city –the list could go on forever.

Unfortunately, the concept of nomadism has recently obtained a negative connotation that links it to people moving to escape wars or climate disasters, or humanitarian crises. Thus, for the two creative figures, nomadism is a word that doesn’t deserve to be thought of as negative, instead to be pondered upon as something exciting, to spark curiosity.

The creative duo believe that nomadism is a piece of broader transformation. It’s one of the infinite choices that humans can identify with. This theme has always been linked to art, design, cinema, and the world of general knowledge. The problem of borders in art doesn’t exist – Nomadism is aligned with knowing and exploring.

ERRANTI by Francesca Alfano Miglietti

This exhibition curated by FAM will be a journey. She mentioned a quote, as Kandinskij said, ‘For years, I have tried to get viewers to walk around in my painting. I wanted to force them to forget about themselves, to even disappear in there’. FAM wants visitors to immerse themselves in the pieces. This voyage is a summary of works, becoming a holistic picture featuring the works of 20 artists. ERRANTI is a pilgrimage through the visions of artists, their images and atmospheres, but also a one-way ticket towards abstraction, ending with visitors questioning their idea regarding contemporary art.

ERRANTI in English means ‘those who wonder’, while referring to nomadic people as well as those who distance themselves from society in the correct way, according to FAM. The words wandering and error have a common root in the Italian language. Error is closely linked to the idea of errant knights in novels, adventurers obsessed by their actions and driven by never-ending journeys. Wandering and actions of the knights are dominated by unpredictable presence of error.

A Tribute to Hybrid in Today’s World

A hybrid defines today’s culture. Knowledge, awareness, art, and philosophy are all born from the encounter between individuals with stories often based on different experimental and conceptual backgrounds.

Cultures have always been hybrid and on the move, but ERRANTI shows through an artistic channel how it has been done and gives various interpretations. FAM believes all visitors can relate to the hybrid concept, especially in the realm of career, as at some point the majority of us had to do a hybrid work during the pandemic.

Everything About Culture is Related to Displacement

FAM continues to elaborate about the idea that ERRANTI is a journey at Lake Como Design Festival. She claims its culture that moves us, pushes us into unexpected territories, makes us see different points of view. Culture isn’t comforting for most, but it’s questioning the certainties and beliefs that makes the journey unique.

«I think of culture as a hybrid, something changing constantly, reshuffling, aggregating and recomposing itself in the flow of meaning that circulates daily in the current landscape», explains FAM. Nothing is fixed, nothing is pure, cultures follow mixed logics and draw from the strength that allows everyone to create their own way of adapting to the environment in Neo-nomadism. An exhibition can only be thought of as a journey, nothing more, nor less, neither fussy nor confusing, for Francesca.

FAM wants to stimulate visitors to reflect upon the idea of departing. An exhibition is thought of as a situation where views can be involved and placed in a state of conceptual confidence, border lining obsession. Thus, the exhibition isn’t done to show, but to let people know of something new or make them aware.

ERRANTI will feature twenty artists. Based on their poetics and the concept of wandering in their art, they have been chosen. There are artists who investigate and analyze this methodology of working. ERRANTI will feature a small section of pieces where visitors can seemingly wander within the art. Photographs, installations, objects and videos will stimulate visitors to reflect on the idea of departing. The work itself as a nomadic condition linked between symbolic and physical areas. The pieces and physical spaces are a combination that allows visitors to become active, pay attention and wander freely.

Como Lake Front Locations

Among the locations selected for this edition of Lake Como Design Festival, Casa Bianca is one that will not disappoint. This historic residence overlooks Lake Como and is now open to the public for the first time during the festival. The villa is gearing up to host an exhibition of collectible design pieces from designers. They are working in collaboration with Galerie Philia, featuring talents like Lorenzo Bini, Frédéric Saulou, Karu Design, and dAM Atelier.

The Casartelli Science Museum will host designers, publishers, and galleries dedicated to contemporary design. In collaboration with Catawiki, the works submitted by exhibitors will be sold through an online action.

REFRESHMENT Design Talk with Prashanth Cattaneo

Journalist Prashanth Cattaneo was tapped, due to his interest and passion related to design, social and culture. He will curate the speaking sections at Villa Gallia. named REFRESHMENT. This series of talks offers visitors an opportunity to meet and get to know authors and leaders within the world of Italian design.

Wanderers Welcome

Artistic Director Lorenzo Butti hopes to stress this year’s theme and add touches of nomadic nature around the various locations. Lake Como Design Festival is a fixed annual event, but also metamorphoses to accompany visitors on a voyage of discovery of the artistic and architectural heritage of Lake Como. Mr. Butti desires to make Lake Como seen as an international hotspot for creativity as visitors often flock to nearby Milan.

The aim of Lake Como Design week is to gain status as a point of reference for international art scenes. Thus the festival will expand its context to attract more visitors over time. Those visiting can discover themselves, through the deep cultural heritage of the Lake Como area. Mr. Butti believes that we all tend to talk too much about function, material and the production cycle. In the future, we can’t restrict ourselves to a linear discourse on form and aesthetics.
