Put down your phone and go for a walk – Jana Sojka, childhood, adulthood

«Dusk is my favorite moment and it seems like the earth starts to take deep breaths after a long and busy day» – Jana Sojka’s night tales

Jana Sojka’s night Landscapes

«I’ve never thought that one day I would be so inspired by the colours, especially deep blue and pink and the colours (space) between them. Today, while collecting sweet peas flowers at my allotment, I noticed that they’ve got the colours I would like to see in my art.

They may look pretentious, but I’m not scared of that. Dusk is my favourite moment and it seems like the earth starts to take deep breaths after a long and busy day. Sometimes, during the day, I spot a place that, for me, would look much better at night.

I keep notes of these places to come back when it’s dark. It’s all about the pleasure of seeing before the pleasure of taking photographs. My night escapades are not necessarily about photographing but noticing the world as distinct from the noise of a daily life. A single light in darkness, intense colours, strange noises, shadows on the buildings, banal architectural shapes -our visual conversation.

I want my work to have more and more texture, so others can connect with it more, feel it, touch it. Photography is also a paper, which I like to experiment with. I collect it, especially the old one that took on a life of its own. It reminds me of the human body, the skin. So imperfect, textured, wrinkled, with different types of colour tones.

Put down your phone and go for a night walk».

Jana Sojka

Polish visual artist, based in the North of England. Sojka produces work in a variety of media including experimental photography, animation, and collage. Not being exposed to art in her childhood gave her a big curiosity in adulthood.
