MIA Photo Fair, Milan. 100 exhibitors, including 70 galleries, from 10 different countries

MIA Fair 2022

MIA – Milan Image Art Fair returns to its original location, spring, with news and confirmations. Firstly, the XXI edition will mark the begin of the collaboration between the Milanese fair and Fiere di Parma group. «It is a milestone for us. We started as a ‘start-up’ fair and now we are a large industrial group in the trade fair sector. We will delegate the organizational part to them, while we will keep working on the creative one. This collaboration will also lead to synergies in terms of communication, press office and network creation». The co-founder and director of MIA, Lorenza Castelli, explains. According to Atonio Cellie, CEO of Fiere di Parma, the goal is to project the event to a wordwild scale. «Thanks to the extraordinary and lively contemporaneity of the event and its exhibitors». 

MIA Photo Fair today

MIA has grown into a cultural platform with an educational vocation on photography. According to Castelli, MIA is today a reference point for photography and art in general.

«The fair’s audience used to focus on technical issues – such as the type of camera and lens employed. Nowadays the focus shifted on what the artist wants to communicate, just as in any other artistic discipline. Photography is a medium like any other», she claims.

Another source of pride for Castelli is the fact that they managed to bring many art enthusiasts closer to photography. They created ha new pool of collectors who approached art through photography and now move across different artistic languages.

The image of MIA Fair 2022 is by the artist Larissa Ambachtsheer. With her works from the series You Choose, I seduce (2017). She creates sets and staging for still lives of fruit and vegetables questioning the role of color in food. In occasion of the XXI edition, Milan will host with eye-catching billboards and pictures of colorful lemons and melons.

The international scope

The heart of MIA Fair is Main section, the sector of the fair hosting the majority of the exhibitors.

After pandemic and last two editions, MIA Fair 2022 will see the return of many international exhibitors. «This year we are expecting 100 exhibitors, including 70 galleries, from 10 different countries. The United States will be finally back.

The confirmation of Beyond Photography – Dialogue, curated by Domenico de Chirico who put photography in dialogue with other artistic languages. Travelling across Italy, Ripa followed “an invisible gas pipeline” which crosses roads and numerous “natural oases” supplying the peninsula with green energy derived from hydrogen and biomethane.

Along the journey thephotographer got in touch with the inhabitants of the peninsula who have learnt to coexist with a discreet yet massive infrastructure.

10 yeas of MIA Fair

«It is a constructive story of a real and fruitful collaboration between industry and territory. I think that the most symbolic testimony is the collaboration with the Director of the botanical garden of Palermo. The book which collects the pictures and the research work of Ripa testifies to the possibility of a more efficient and sustainable collaboration between infrastructures and the ecosystems.

Another section of MIA 2022, curated by Denis Curti, will be devoted to travel with series of shots by Roberto Polillo. With the support of Eberhard & Co., one of MIA’s main sponsor, MIA Fair will host Quei temerari delle strade bianche. Nuvolari, Varzi, Campari e altri eroi alla Cuneo – Colle della Maddalena. The exhibition curated by Giosuè Boetto Cohen will narrate some moments of the Cuneo-Colle della Maddalena car race.

MIA Fair’s awards

For the 11th consecutive year, BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas is partner as Main Sponsor, promoting the BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas Award, assigned by a jury of independent artists.

«In 2020, the first year of the pandemic, BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas decided not to cancel the prize, even though the fair did not take place. We really appreciated their effort. It was a beautiful gesture from their side», Castelli claims.

In occasion of this year’s exhibition, a member of the jury, Nicola Zanella – lecturer at Luiss Business School – will involve some of his students in the creation of curatorial paths. Aiming to bringing students to contemporary art, emphasizing the social mission of BNL.

MIA Fair will award a prize on the fight against food waste titled Irinox Save the Food. With the support of Irinox, leading company in the production of blast chillers and storage systems for the professional and domestic sectors. The award will be curated by Claudio Composti. New Post Photography Award, organized by MIA Fair and curated by Gigliola Foschi, makes its return as well in 2022. The competition is aimed at promoting the most creative trends and fields of research in the world of contemporary photography.

MIA Fair’s future aim

«I am sure that the metaverse will allow users to broaden the fruition of photography. And NFTs represent a new frontier for the photographic production. Gallery Paola Colombari will present NFT works by Barbara Pinna, one of the few Italian female crypto artists», Castelli explains.

Thanks to the new partnership with Fiere di Parma and BDC, the cultural center of Parma, MIA Fair 2022 promotes the first edition of La Nuova Scelta Italiana, which aims at fostering the work of three established photographers who are believed to become the heirs of the great masters of Italian photography.

The winning artists in addition to a cash prize, will exhibit their works at MIA Fair 2022 in autumn.

For the eleventh consecutive year, BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas is partner of MIA Fair in the role of Main Sponsor, promoting the BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas Award, assigned by a jury to artists exhibiting their works in the fair with their own reference galleries.

In occasion of this year’s exhibition the jury member Nicola Zanella – writer and lecturer at Luiss Business School – will involve some of his students in the creation of curatorial paths aimed to bring young people closer to contemporary art, emphasizing the social mission of BNL.

With the support of Irinox, leading company in storage systems of stainless steel electrical panels, the fair will also award a prize on the topic of food and the fight against food waste titled Irinox Save the Food. The award will be curated by Claudio Composti.

Cultural and educational programs

The winning artists – Luca Gilli, Francesco Jodice e Silvia Camporesi – in addition to a cash prize, will exhibit their works at MIA Fair 2022 in a dedicated space and, in autumn, at the BDC headquarters in Parma.

MIA Fair has offered a rich cultural program, with events and conferences dedicated to the world of art and photography. The main goal of the talks is to encourage conscious collecting thanks to the insights and expertise of Italian and international experts in the field.

«Today’s collectors are much more prepared than they were in the past: they know how to estimate the value of a work as well as the stability of its price over time. You must also be prepared: know the market, the author, the galleries which represent the artist and the markets in which they operate. MIA has always been very attentive to the market’s rules», Castell claims.

Art and new generation

The cultural program of MIA Fair 2022 places at the center of reflection the complex and ramified relationships between image and technologies, in the immaterial landscape of the post-digital world.

One of the topic which will be assessed by the guest speakers of MIA Fair 2022 will be the metaverse.

The new opportunities it provides both to creators and users and its possible negative impact on society. According to Castelli, photography is also experiencing a countertendency – the return of analogue photography.

«Despite the spread of new technologies and digitization in the world of art, young people are appreciating analogue and vintage photography more and more. It may seem like a contradiction, but it is not. This is just the beauty of art».

Founded in 2011 in Milan by Lorenza and Fabio Castelli, MIA Fair has become an international platforms for galleries and authors. With its rich cultural program, MIA Fair aims at supporting and promoting conscious art collection. The 11th edition will take place at Superstudio Maxi from 28 April to 1 May 2022.
