Humans and beekeeping: a strict monarchy is a highly functional cooperative system – Maurizio Annese

Photographer Maurizio Annese visits Cascina Linterno in Milan to explore the dynamics and hierarchies among bees. In his shots, the investigation of a complex social structure becomes inspiration

Even though the hive is structured as a strict monarchy, it’s foundations are provided by a highly functional cooperative system. I tried to focus on the bees point of view, even when they were not physically in front of the camera. In a way I tried to reproduce their view, both metaphorically and aesthetically. This is the reason behind the use of wide lens. The same approach was used by Umberto for the styling, his use of color and of the headgear related to the apicultural world. Bees flying all over my camera and hands
