Lampoon / Diverso – House doesn’t mean home. Katie Silvester on the meaning of being a family

Katie Silvester and Sam Carder roam around Scotland recounting how the concept of family has changed and how there is nothing more dynamic than human relationships

Katie Silvester shooting for Lampoon Issue 24: we would drive to each family home

Emma Breschi shared a picture of her family out for dinner. Once Sam Carder and I started talking, the idea blossomed into shooting multiple tight knit family units and documenting them. We reached out to some families – Emma and her big, noisy, multigenerational family. The Byfields who have been married for 42 years. Aria and his dad, who love each other more than words can describe. Once we knew which families we were working with Sam started sourcing mostly earth conscious clothing to shoot them all in. I shot the whole project on 120 and printed it by hand in the darkroom.

Katie Silvester:

Film photographer based in London. Silvester strives to bridge the gap between commissioned and personal work by breaking down and utilising the genuine intimacy of friendship on set. Drawing inspiration from her time on the road, and the freedom and spontaneity it affords, she captures the natural beauty of her subjects and explores their connection to the world around them.
