We had given up on summer. ‘Close your eyes. Imagine the sun on your skin’. On day fifty-eight we perfected the practice. Our studio apartment as a seaside cafe. On day sixty-three we escaped to the island. Day sixty-eight: sunburn. Day seventy-two: lemon in your hair. Day seventy-seven: the taste of salt in your kiss. Day eighty-four: a new dance. Day eighty-eight: eight years together. How to dance the cha-cha. On day 108 we found Italy in a rundown guesthouse for men. ‘Clothing optional’. Then the rain came. And the smell of honeysuckle and jasmine.
