«It is a period of reflection, taking place before considering the restraints of production». Interview with designer Ninamounah Langestraat
Langestraat, from biology to designer
While studying biology I realized the field work was only 5% of the job. I needed something more hands on, so I started studying textile and philosophy at the Rietveld Academy combining my taxidermy work, but it was still too slow. I found out about the fashion department through friends who worked day and night. I was sold to fashion. Riffing on uniforms and craftsmanship, tailored suit and motor garments is our inspiration. The way they are used in the collection changes every time though. It also enables us to specialize in certain skills. The clothes evolve over time, and maybe in the future we will see them completely differently. A slower approach to fashion makes more sense. Ninamounah stands for embracing one’s animalistic instinct to emancipate society.
Amsterdam-based label headed by creative director and designer Ninamounah Langestraat and brand director Robin Burggraaf, using biological methods to dissect the deeper layers of the cultural mantle found in fashion design. Emphasizing instinctive and experimental strengths that transcend bodily and mental conventions and constructs. Ninamounah is making the unusual usual—transgressing comfort zones in fashion and exploring humans animalistic side.
