About being in transition – Luis Venegas and some tea with his friends

«The boys are wearing clothes that were supposed to be designed for women… but in these days, is there anybody out there still really making a difference about who wears what?»

Luis Venegas for Lampoon

I’m a Creative Director who occasionally becomes a Photographer. I only take photos when I have the freedom to develop an idea or a certain aesthetic that I’m interested in to explore. Sometimes I take photos on a daily basis during a couple of weeks and sometimes it takes a couple of months for me to pick up my camera. I like to keep things simple, the smaller team possible, usually no music and very often just natural light and shooting on film. I depend very much on the specific circumstances happening while I’m shooting. For example, if the day is cloudy, I guess the images are going to be pretty foggy – and that’s perfect for me. I like to be flexible, trust my instincts and also trust my little compact film camera.

Pre-production is something I’m not fond of; thinking on what and who am I going to shoot and how I’d like those elements to look. In this specific case, I’m shooting clothes worn by some of my very favorite models based in Madrid, no more no less. The models I shoot are very often people who interest me beyond their appearance; usually I’ve shot them before, there’s an ongoing working relationship between us. In this case I also wanted to add Leo Rydell Jost’s carpets – all unique art pieces – against a yellow background to create a simple yet somewhat unexpected set. Lastly, the boys are wearing clothes that were supposed to be designed for women… but in these days, is there anybody out there still really making a difference about who wears what? Let’s just have fun.
