Connecting, expressing, having fun, being political, traveling. Not easily satisfied, future-oriented. Émilie Fouilloux in conversation with Brussels based dancer Nick Coutsier
I was born in Braine, a town in the countryside south of Brussels, Belgium. I’m currently based in the city center. Diversity gives me energy: Brussels is more international than we think – many nationalities and languages coexist together. I have lived in Los Angeles, Barcelona, London, Berlin, but most of my stays were work-related and usually only lasted a few months. I’ve studied at the Royal Conservatory Artesis, in Antwerp. Dance has somehow always been part of my life. It is not a passion, but a necessity. Through the years, I got to understand that I love and cherish mostly what dance allows me to do – connecting, expressing, having fun, being political, traveling, making my mom proud. I am really not easily satisfied, especially with myself, so at times it can get complicated when I look back at my past experiences and what I have accomplished. Sometimes I wish I would have done things differently, or better, or who knows, but of course I’m overall happy to be where I am today. I am future-oriented. On many levels and different scales, every person that I established a relationship of trust with did in their own way change a little bit my perception of life, hopefully for the better.
