Wester Affair – time needs to pass before we can look back and reflect

It is a period of reflection and relates to aesthetics, taking place before considering the restraints of production. Intw – Olivia Pudelko

How do you bring a vision into full-fruition? Forming ideas, images and concepts means to operate beyond the input of our physical senses. It is a period of reflection and relates to aesthetics, taking place before considering the restraints of production. Design is the process that precedes the discipline of manufacturing. Our Fashion Editor Giorgia Fuzio in conversation with Olivia Pudelko of Western Affair.

OLIVIA’S INSPIRATION

I’m curious about finding new materials and seeing what I could make from them. Textures inspire me – experimenting how I can translate what I make into wearable pieces. Using what’s right in front of you instead of making a fuss about something else is for me a sustainable method. Imperfections are what gives depts and tells a story. My interest right now is looking at glass and porcelain shoes I would love to make something inspired by this in the future. I like doing custom orders to make the shoes for the person who orders – for example I made a design in square toe for someone recently. The last collection. I wanted to give comfort to my customers through familiarity and simplicity. The shape of the shoe is a classic: sturdy mule. You can slip it on in a second and wear for hours. The sheep fur is a matter I use in my work. It brings warmth and comfort.

There are 5 different colours: pistachio, buttermilk, taupe, indigo and crimson. With the current state, there is a sense of sadness in the air. It has been emotional making these shoes and even wondering if there is a point anymore, what is going to happen to small brands. Or even brands like me who have literally just started. I don’t have anything to fall back on except my mother. She helped me make this line, she drew out patterns and cut my fabric. I think more time needs to pass before we can look back and reflect on everything. I can’t say I am happy but I am proud of making it through and being able to present this collection to you.
